DRAAIMOLEN
“It was the best main stage experience we have ever created”
Draaimolen
Surge is an ambitious exploration of how large-scale collective experiences can be redefined and elevated in the realm of music. Conceived for the main stage in collaboration with Draaimolen, this project represents Architecture Social Club’s (ASC) partnership with one of Europe’s most celebrated music festivals. Together, we sought to create not just an installation but an immersive theatre that would not only be novel but resonates deeply with both performers and the 5,000-strong audience.
The installation featured a monumental 40m x 10m screen constructed from 400 tungsten blinders, with laser lines intricately mapped onto each light.
The screen combined flowing animations with warm tungsten lights, that extended over the crowd in three dimensions using laser light creating dynamic floating sculptural forms in the air. We developed real-time code systems to respond directly to the musicians, amplifying the live experience and abstract storytelling for the audience. It invited the audience to lose themselves in the moment, forging a deeper connection with the music, the performers, and each other. Surge aims to experiences that linger long after the lights dim and the music fades.
